The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Manager of Science Communications is responsible for overseeing the US Science Support Program (USSSP) and Scientific Ocean Drilling Coordination Office (SODCO)  to science communication initiatives. This role focuses on increasing awareness of scientific ocean drilling and geoscience, managing digital communications, ?leading outreach and education efforts for expeditions, and inspiring STEM students to pursue careers in Earth sciences.

The Manager works closely with USSSP and SODCO  personnel. This is a full-time, in-person position based on the LDEO campus.

Responsibilities

  • ? Manages and coordinates science communication and messaging for the U.S. scientific ocean drilling community, including strategic deployment of social media platforms; creation of digital community updates, newsletters, and other communications; and maintenance of mailing lists.
    ? Supports the maintenance and management of existing USSSP websites and assists in the development of a new SODCO website to maximize dissemination of information and key strategic messages to the U.S. scientific ocean drilling community.
    ? Performs regular assessment of impact across all digital communications platforms and reports those analytics to USSSP and SODCO team leadership.
    ? Works with other program personnel in assisting U.S. proponents in the development of drilling proposals, with a focus on creating strategies to communicate the proposal?s scientific aims to the public and enhancing its broader impacts on society..
    ? Assists USSSP and SODCO in promoting external outreach activities relevant to the U.S. scientific ocean drilling community, including a collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History and coordination and attendance at domestic meetings and conferences.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor?s degree or equivalent experience required plus 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with social media essential (e.g., social networking, social curation on leading social media platforms), including utilizing the metrics and analytics capabilities of each platform.
  • Must be able to work independently and to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are required.
  • Familiarity and experience with MS Office required; graphic design skills highly desirable.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of related outreach experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with scientific research and programs is desirable but not essential.
